Errors and Omissions insurance for Utilization Management job

This is a common question among physicians looking for UM job whether we have to buy our own E&O policy or if the employer provides one. For some reason, the employers do not seem to let the physician advisors know about this insurance even after starting the UM job. I am not sure why!

Errors and Omissions (E&O) insurance, also known as Certificate of Liability Insurance, is a type of insurance coverage that helps protect professionals and companies from claims of negligence or failure to perform professional duties adequately.

I had to ask the employer about this and then was given the copy of E&O certificate which showed the following info and verbiage.

Producer of the insurance and contact info

Insurer affording coverage

Insured [my employer].

Certificate Holder [my name]

THIS IS TO CERTIFY THAT THE POLICIES OF INSURANCE LISTED BELOW HAVE BEEN ISSUED TO THE INSURED NAMED ABOVE FOR THE POLICY PERIOD INDICATED. NOTWITHSTANDING ANY REQUIREMENT, TERM OR CONDITION OF ANY CONTRACT OR OTHER DOCUMENT WITH RESPECT TO WHICH THIS CERTIFICATE MAY BE ISSUED OR MAY PERTAIN, THE INSURANCE AFFORDED BY THE POLICIES DESCRIBED HEREIN IS SUBJECT TO ALL THE TERMS, EXCLUSIONS AND CONDITIONS OF SUCH POLICIES. LIMITS SHOWN MAY HAVE BEEN REDUCED BY PAID CLAIMS.

COMMERCIAL GENERAL LIABILITY -Occurrence [not claims based]. It had policy number, Policy effective dates and limits. Each occurrence limit is $2M.

So basically, it looked like the whole company had this Certificate of Liability Insurance which covers their Commercial general liability, Automobile liability and Umbrella liability insurance together.

Anyhow, the bottom line is that the employer should provide Errors and Omissions insurance for Utilization Management jobs either it is commercial insurance or hospital or an other company which supports hospitals.
